We want to introduce to you all our dearest Spanish photographer Mara Alonso, for those of you who doesn’t know she was featured in our latest issue creating and letting us in into her marvelous world, we are gonna be having a lovely conversation with her so more people can meet here and feel a connection with her, like the one I have.

For those who doesn’t know you at all, how would you describe yourself along with your work?

My work revolves around something that has been with me for as long as I can remember: dance. That’s why I’m always drawn to movement, or to finding unusual postures in the body. I used to dream of becoming a dancer, until I encountered the still image. Suddenly, I had found another way to love art — and I’ve always had a deep interest in aesthetics, in every form.

Once we talk about a little house near the fields, don’t remember the name exactly, but it was a house of memories for you, how could you said emotions, memories are related to your work?

(Mara laughs) I love you have this memory in your mind. This house is called “cortijo” in Andalucía andit is a building into the field in Granada, where I am from.

My connection to that place is very strong because I spent my entire childhood and teenage years there with my grandparents and my cousin. It’s a space that allowed me to live close to nature, and I played endlessly in those fields. In fact, I’ve danced a lot there — and I still do. It also connects me to my aunt, who is a painter and always loved capturing the spring landscapes in oil, and to my uncle, who is a photographer. He used to go up to the rooms on the top floor, where there are tiny windows that let in the most beautiful light. He would photograph his partner there, and those images, full of delicacy and taste, have always stayed with me.

We know your first approach to fine arts was through the dance, what things the discipline of dancing gives to your actual work?

To this day, I still can’t tell which kind of dance truly connects me to my visual work. I’ve always danced flamenco. For those who don’t know it, it’s a discipline marked by strength, character, and a kind of cold blood in its execution. My work as a photographer is much more delicate, and I don’t think it conveys all that raw intensity I’m so familiar with. But I suppose, for me, beauty lies in subtlety and the ethereal. And any form of dance carries a great deal of both. I think that’s what I’m drawn to in the visual realm. A still image captures a single moment within a succession of many movements, gestures… It’s just a fleeting instant that makes what I see so fascinating.

Have you ever think about creating a story through the dance?

Yes. You’ve definitely caught me in a moment of development. I’ve always wanted to do it, but I’ve never quite known how to connect these two worlds through my own lens. And right now, I’m working on creating a visual piece where I can express what this world means to me in the freest way possible.

Your colours are getting very particular, cold, ethereal, elegant… how was this evolution in you, to discover what colours brings you emotions and sensations? Do you think we say the right words to describe?

Color is something I’m truly passionate about. When I first started taking images, warm tones gave me a special kind of vibration. But nothing is random — it’s all deeply psychological, hehe. I was going through a time of moving between cities, and I became fascinated with comparing the sunsets in each place. Some were marked by saturated pinks, others by deep oranges, and others by incredibly warm golden tones. It drove me crazy — I was always looking for the explanation. Was it the climate? Pollution? The geographical location? I became obsessed with those warm tones, and it was inevitable that they started appearing in my images, because I was constantly chasing that moment.

Later, I realized that, even as a child, I was always mesmerized by paintings or objects that contained the color blue — no matter the shade. There are some fascinating books that explore the reasons behind our attraction to certain colors. So I started to explore this world in a very organic way. But the truth is, I tend to get obsessed with certain things and I love diving deep, exploring every aspect of them.

I think the world of color is an incredibly magical universe. I’ve had true love affairs with certain colors — and it’s something I can’t quite explain. In a way, I love it when a color in an image makes you want to feel its texture… hahaha, I know, it’s a bit of a wild thought.

Is there a place that is your dream to be and to shoot?

There are so many places I’d love to go and shoot in. But right now, I’m really drawn to the organic world and nature. I’d love to produce something in a volcanic or jungle setting… I think my upcoming projects will lean more in that direction than towards urban spaces.

What inspires you?

Anything can inspire me — a person on the subway, a specific place I pass while walking down the street, meeting someone I admire, a work of art of any kind, cinema, a character in a book. I truly believe inspiration is everywhere. You just have to be open to it and let it come through. I love taking photos with my phone of everything I see that inspires me.

We are gonna give you some words and you’ll need to choose from your archive the one that matches the best for you
